Study Shows Recent Graduates Have Little to Smile About
Of all those graduating university in the UK, it appears as though budding young dentists have the broadest smiles. Whilst it is true that approximately 1.52m UK citizens are unemployed, dentists are still in huge demand.
Unfortunately, the labour market in the UK is still weak so that of last year’s graduates, almost 10pc are still without employment even after six months of searching. According to a report released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, dentistry and veterinary science graduates have had the most success.
Oddly enough, after all the complaining that UK employers have been doing in regards to the lack of engineers in the UK, this group of graduates were hardest hit as only 87.7pc of recent graduates have found employment. Computer science fared no better with 84.7pc still unemployed.
Those who studied dentistry, medicine or veterinary science had the highest success as recent graduates and the report from the Higher Education Statistics Agency states that less than one-half of one percent were without jobs within the six month period after graduating.
As mentioned, computer science graduates are not faring well and some statistics state that as many as 15pc are unable to find employment within a year after graduation. This came as a surprise since computer technology is progressing almost at the speed of light. It would seem that there would be a need for those up on the latest technology.
Perhaps there isn’t much to smile about in the employment arena however after pounding the pavement looking for a job Fido can still make you smile. But that’s ok because there will be plenty of dentists to keep your smile in tip top shape and vets to keep Fido healthy enough to greet you at the door.
