Contract Workers Avoiding the Tax Man

In today’s sluggish labour market more and more corporations have been downsizing and one of the first cuts being made is in the number of employees on staff. However, this has left a void in some areas leading to an increase in the amount of contract workers being taken on.

If you are amongst the growing numbers of contract workers in the UK, one thing you should be cautious of is making certain your taxes are in order. It may not be an easy task figuring out how much to pay and when it is due but it can be done with the help of an umbrella tax company.

In fact, the growing numbers of umbrella companies in the UK are enabling contract workers to actually focus on their work whilst leaving taxes and payroll in the hands of a PAYE company. By contracting an umbrella company the only thing you need to do is report where and when you work and the umbrella company will do the rest.

Most umbrella companies have an online portal where you can report the particulars of each contract job, including expenses, and they will take care of all deductions, whilst making sure that all taxes and VAT are reported timely with HMRC.

Unless you are willing to form a limited company and hire an accountant to keep your books, working with an umbrella company makes the most sense as far as avoiding the tax man. Simple errors have been known to cost contract workers hundreds, if not thousands, of Pounds in fines because of erroneous (or late!) reporting to HMRC.

It is true that no one likes to pay the tax man, but at least let an umbrella company maximise your allowances so that you can limit your payments only to what is due.
